Tailgating Tips: 3 Healthy Game Day Snacks

Now that September is in full swing, a couple of things come to mind almost immediately…the weather should start to get a little cooler, the kids are back in school and last but certainly not least, football season!

With the football season well upon us, tailgates and parties will soon take up the majority of your weeknights. You already know that you’ll be the most popular tailgater with your Little Guy. However, what’s the most common tailgate item that also is the most popular? You guessed it, snacks! Tailgates are notorious for scrumptious goodies such as wings, potato salad and plenty of chips and queso. While we all love these amazingly delicious goodies, they don’t always love us back in regards to loosening our belts a notch or two! Give these three healthy alternatives a try for something different…trust us, you and your jeans will thank us!

Grilled Chicken and Veggie Skewers

The barbeque is always the popular kid at tailgates. With this option, you’ll still satisfy your inner desire to cook meat over an open flame, but be able to do so while losing the unhealthy fat and grease in more common barbeque options. All you’ll need to do is grill your chicken and vegetables the night before the big game and spear them together on a skewer. Voila!

Pizza Squares

Pizza is another one of those all-too-common tailgate foods; you practically can’t have a successful tailgate without it! Lighten up one of your favorite food groups (that’s right, we said food GROUPS) by making one yourself. You can buy whole-wheat pizza dough from any grocery store, and top it with mozzarella, chicken, avocado, sun-dried tomatoes, etc. Unlike the football season, the topping options are endless.

Turkey Meatballs

Meatballs are delicious and sometimes get a bad rap. Of course, they’re fine to eat in moderation, but give them a healthy makeover by using ground turkey instead of ground beef. Give yourself plenty of protein while not missing any of that familiar savoriness.

Enjoy all that football season has to offer this year, and make sure to include your Little Guy to tow all of your favorite snacks to every tailgate.
