Tips on Using the Bathroom Outdoors

It’s not usually a popular topic of discussion, but using the bathroom regularly and more importantly, correctly is vital while camping! Below, we have listed some tips and tricks to remember while getting your number 1 or 2 on.

Find Your Perfect Spot

This is perhaps the most important tip of them all. Before you set out to explore, do a little research to have an idea as to have an idea of the proper guidelines and requirements for proper waste disposal. Check in with the park or area before you set out for your adventure.

Camper Tip: Stay away from bodies of water and make sure you are far away from any campsite!

Camper Tip: Try to choose an area with plenty of sun as this will help break down waste faster.

Get Diggin’

When forming your “cathole,” (a.k.a. your royal throne) make sure that your hole is at least 6 inches deep and 8 inches across. It’s extremely important you follow these measurements.

Doing the Deed

So, you’ve got your cathole prepared with the proper measurements. It’s time to get down to business. This should go without saying, but make sure to hold your pants away from yourself. Trust us on this one! Also, don’t be afraid to squat. You may have heard that you can lean on a rock or other sturdy object, but we advise just to squat.

Erasing the Evidence

Before heading out on any outdoor adventure, pack any necessary toilet paper or baby wipes. Remember, you’ll need to take any garbage with you after you’re all done, so pack plenty of Ziploc bags. If that’s not your style, you can also clean up with any NON-POISONOUS leaves, snow, a polished stone, etc.

Camper Tip: Do some research on the poisonous plants of the area, TRUST US!

Leave No Trace

Once you have been relieved, cover up the hole with dirt, twigs, leaves or whatever is most appropriate to cover your…area.

The last step is just as crucial as the rest…wash your hands! Whether this is with hand sanitizer or biodegradable soap, just make sure to get it done!
